The 6ft 8ins Anderson ranked 35 in the world, needed just over one and a half hours to defeat his opponent 6-4 6-4.
Switzerland's 14th seed Stanislas Wawrinka overcame Argentina's David Nalbandian 6-1 6-4 victory in one hour and nine minutes.
Former world number one Juan Carlos Ferrero lost 3-6 6-1 7-5 to Latvian wild card Ernests Gulbis while big-serving Ivo Karlovic was a 6-7 (7-2) 6-3 7-6 (7-5) winner over Juan Monaco.
Other early winners included Ukraine's Alexandr Dolgopolov, who beat wild card Erik Chovojka 6-3 5-7 6-4, plus Alex Bogomolov Jr, Thomaz Bellucci and Ivan Dodig.
