The Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, site of Sunday’s Honda Indy 200, might offer a few turns for the better for Danica Patrick.
The Andretti Autosport driver has struggled on road and street courses this season in the Izod IndyCar Series, notching two top-10 finishes in six starts. Qualifying on the twisty tracks has been even tougher for the circuit’s most popular driver, who hasn’t started higher than 17th on a road or street course.
Patrick qualified second at Mid-Ohio in 2007, tying her career best starting spot on a road course. She started second in Sonoma, Calif., a few weeks later but hasn’t qualified higher than seventh on a road course in four years since.
Patrick, who is mulling a full-time switch to NASCAR next season, said earlier this season she wasn’t pleased by the increasing number of road courses in IndyCar.
“I just don’t qualify the car well, so it makes for a long, long race having to come from far back,” she said. “Unbelievably, in 2011, we have 10 road courses and seven ovals. It’s a disappointing schedule, but it’s what the schedule is.
“I don’t think it’s a mystery that I like the oval racing, and I think it’s good racing for us.”
Points leader Dario Franchitti is the defending winner at Mid-Ohio. Will Power, second in points, started from the pole last year.
