Home favourite Andreas Haider-Maurer suffered a shock exit at the hands of world number 196 Antonio Veic in the Bet-at-Home Cup in Kitzbuhel, Austria.
The 23-year-old Croatian underdog broke serve early in the first set but Haider-Maurer hit back to level at 3-3. Haider-Maurer then came through a difficult service game at 5-5, in which he trailed 0-30 and was called for a foot-fault at 30-30, and took the set on a tie-break.
But Veic took the second set 6-4 after breaking in the 10th game - and broke twice more in the third to complete a 6-7 (7/3) 6-4 6-2 win.
Seventh-seeded Spaniard Marcel Granollers suffered no such troubles as he eased past Italy's Filippo Volandri 6-4 6-2, breaking serve twice in each set.
Colombian Santiago Giraldo enjoyed a 6-3 6-3 win against Germany's Daniel Brands, while Brazil's Joao Souza beat fellow qualifier Jerzy Janowicz, from Poland, 6-3 4-6 7-6 (7/3).
