Farah to bid for 5,000 gold!

Great Britain's Mo Farah has been given the go-ahead to take part in the 5,000m at the World Championships.

The Somalia-born athlete narrowly missed out on an anticipated gold medal when he was caught by Ibrahim Jeilan of Ethiopia in Sunday's 10,000m.

Farah always had the 5,000 to fall back on although he was never going to commit to 'doubling-up' until after Sunday's race.

And despite suffering from blisters, the medical team has given the 28-year-old the go-ahead to take his place in Thursday's heats, with the final coming on the final day of competition on Sunday.

Redknapp: Modric staying put

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp insists there is no chance of Luka Modric leaving the club before the transfer deadline passes.

The Croatia midfielder has been the subject of firm interest from Chelsea this summer and there had been suggestions the deal could be revived before the summer window closes at 11pm.

But Redknapp said he was "one million per cent" convinced that chairman Daniel Levy would not sell Modric.

Levy has been adamant that Modric will not be allowed to leave White Hart Lane, and even though the 25-year-old asked not to play in Sunday's clash with Manchester City, according to Redknapp, the club's stance remains the same.

Redknapp promised Modric would not be on the move.

"No, that won't happen. One million per cent," he told Sky Sports News.

Peter Crouch could be among the players leaving Tottenham on Tuesday though, with Redknapp confirming QPR as well as Sunderland are among the clubs keen on the England striker.

"There's three or four clubs wanting him and he wants to play football," Redknapp said.

"He's too good not to play. He's an outstanding player."

Tottenham have been linked with a late move for Bolton and England defender Gary Cahill, and Redknapp did not deny an interest.

"I've always been an admirer of Gary Cahill. We've got to wait and see," he said on Tuesday.

"We do need to shift one or two.

"So we'll see how the day pans out.

"I'm sure the chairman will be busy on the phone all day today (Tuesday).

"David Bentley needs to move. David's got great ability. I think he could go somewhere. He could do a great job for someone I'm sure."

If enough players leave, Redknapp confirmed he could bring in a couple of new faces.

Joe Cole, linked with French club Lille, could yet be among the additions.

"I love Joe," said Redknapp, who had the midfielder with him at West Ham earlier in their careers.

"I think he's a fantastic player. The problem with Joe is we've got too many players to fit into our squad.

"There may be three or four out. There won't be three or four in. There might be one or two still. We'll wait and see."

Djokovic shows no mercy to sick qualifier Niland!

World number one Novak Djokovic had the easiest of passages to the second round of the U.S. Open as his Irish opponent Conor Niland was forced to retire through illness.

Djokovic was detained on court for just 44 minutes against the qualifier, who was apparently suffering from a stomach upset.

The Serbian was leading 6-0 5-1 when world number 197 Niland finally called it a day to sympathetic applause on the Arthur Ashe Stadium Court.

The 29-year-old had been sick as he made his way to the showpiece court and could not summon the strength to offer much resistance.

The opening set took just 21 minutes and Niland salvaged just a little pride by claiming a single game in the shortened second before quitting.

Djokovic had come into the match as a slight injury doubt after retiring in the Cincinnati final against Andy Murray with a shoulder problem.

But he showed no sign of it against Niland as he began his bid for a third grand slam title of the season.

The top seed next faces either Pere Riba of Spain or Argentina's Carlos Berlocq for a place in the last 32.

Meanwhile, defending champion Rafael Nadal opened his U.S. Open account with a straight-sets win over Andrey Golubev.

But the world number two was made to work by the Russian, even saving seven set points in the second, before he eventually won 6-3 7-6 (7-1) 7-5.

Nadal's fellow Spaniard, Fifth seed David Ferrer, dropped the opening set to Russia's Igor Andreev but recovered to win 2-6 6-3 6-0 6-4.

Another winner Tuesday was 11th seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France, who scored an impressive 6-4 6-4 6-4 victory over Lu Yen-hsun.

Elsewhere, 14th seed Stanislas Wawrinka beat Maximo Gonzalez 3-6 6-4 6-1 6-3, while Latvia's Ernests Gulbis sent 16th seed Mikhail Youzhny crashing out after an impressive 6-2 6-4 6-4 win.

President confers Narang with Khel Ratna, Arjuna for 19 athletes

Rifle shooter Gagan Narang was conferred the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award by President Pratibha Devisingh Patil at a glittering function in the Ashoka Hall of Rashtrapati Bhawan here Monday.

Narang was the highest medal winner for India in the 2010 Commonwealth Games and is the first Indian to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics. The award carries a statuette, citation and cash prize of Rs.7.5 lakh.

The 28-year-old Hyderabadi was unhappy for having been ignored twice for the honour in 2009 and 2010.

“I am happy now that I have finally got it. It is a great honour and a very special day,” Narang said. “The next goal is to perform well at the Olympics. I am working on my fitness. The pressure to do well is always there but I hope to come through.”

Nineteen sportsmen this year were awarded the Arjuna award. Not more than 15 Arjuna awards are given in any calendar year but keeping in view the performance of Indian athletes in the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games last year, the limit was increased.

Rahul Banerjee (archery), Preeja Sreedharan (athletics), Jwala Gutta (badminton), M. Suranjoy Singh (boxing), Sunil Chhetri (football), Rajpal Singh (hockey), Rakesh Kumar (kabaddi), Tejeswini Bai V (kabaddi-women), Tejaswini Sawant (shooting), Veerdhawal Khade (swimming), Sanjay Kumar (volleyball), Ravinder Singh (wrestling), Naib Subedar Katulu Ravikumar (weightlifting), Wangkhem Sandhyarani Devi (wushu) and Prasantha Karamakar (swimming paralympics) were conferred the Arjuna Awards. Among the Arjuna awardees, Vikas Gowda (athletics), Zaheer Khan (cricket), Ashish Kumar (gymnastics) and Somdev Devvarman (tennis) could not attend the ceremony.

Somdev (US Open in New York), and Vikas (World Athletics Championships, South Korea) could not attend because of their participation in tournaments abroad while Zaheer is in London, recovering from an ankle injury, and Ashish is in Essex (England) training for the World Cup in Belgium.

A beaming Sandhya Rani, who made the switch from boxing to wushu in 2002, hoped the award will inspire more female athletes to take up the sport.

“I can’t describe how I feel. I never expected it. I was a boxer at the national level in 54kg category but my love for martial arts drew me to wushu. I was one of the few girls to take it up but now a few more have come,” Sandhya, who won a silver medal at the 2010 Asian Games, told IANS.

“We now hope we get to train in China or get a Chinese coach as it will help us train even better and get the sport in the country more popularity.”

Chettri, 26, feels the award will encourage him to do even better. He was also the first Indian footballer to ply his trade in the US after he signed up for Major League Soccer (MLS) club Kansas City Wizards.

“It is definitely a good feeling. It is nice whenever your efforts are acknowledged. I will do my best to keep going and do well,” he said.

Henman backs Murray to win his first grand slam in New York

British legend Tim Henman reckons that tennis ace Andy Murray is all set to win his first grand slam in New York this week.

“New York is a very different atmosphere to the other major tournaments, and I always enjoyed it as a grand slam,” the Telegraph quoted Henman, as saying.

Henman was beaten in the semi-finals in 2004 by Roger Federer, the same day Murray lifted the boys’ singles trophy at Flushing Meadows.
“For Andy, however, the biggest factor is the conditions. A fast hard court with a light ball is Andy’s best surface, because he doesn’t need to generate power himself, the court gives him that pace,” he said.

“He is such a good mover and such a good timer of the ball, which means he can turn defence into attack,” he added.

Murray has won 15 of his 18 titles on hard courts; he has reached his three grand slam singles finals on hard courts, the first in the heart of Flushing in 2008.

“Of course, one of the reasons Murray is able to play that way is his attention to fitness, and latterly, diet. He has always been in phenomenally good shape,” Henman said.

“He’s such a great athlete, but all the players keep getting fitter, stronger, faster,” he added.

Guardiola salutes Barcelona history-makers!

Pep Guardiola has said his Barcelona side would go down in football history after they became the most titled team in the European game by beating Porto 2-0 in the European Super Cup.

"These players are part of a unique generation," Guardiola told Spanish daily El Mundo Deportivo.

"This team will go down in the history of the club and the history of football."

By beating Porto, Lionel Messi and co took Barcelona`s tally of European trophies to 15 -- one more than former joint record-holders AC Milan (14).

"These players are exceptional competitors. They never fail and they are very reliable.

"The players are really impeccable. They exude confidence. You`d think that one day they`d get tired, but no, they`re different.

"With such players, the job of the coach is to be constantly alert. A team like this takes a long time to put together but it could fall apart in an instant."
Barcelona, the reigning European champions, will begin their bid for a fourth successive Spanish league title when they welcome Villarreal to Camp Nou for their opening La Liga fixture on Monday.

Drogba injury mars Chelsea win!

Chelsea beat 10-man Norwich 3-1 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday but the victory came at a cost as Didier Drogba was stretchered off with what appeared to be a serious injury.

The Ivory Coast forward fell heavily following an aerial collision with Norwich goalkeeper John Ruddy midway through the second half and needed lengthy treatment before he was taken for further examination.

A rare goal from Jose Bosingwa had given Andre Villas-Boas` side the early lead but Norwich recovered to equalise through captain Grant Holt just after the hour mark following a defensive mix-up.

Frank Lampard`s penalty put Chelsea ahead once more after Ruddy had been sent off for conceding it and debutant Juan Mata scored the third in stoppage time.

Ruddy had made a fine save to push a Ramires long-ranger round a post as early as the second minute as Chelsea started strongly.

Leon Barnett blocked a Fernando Torres effort but Chelsea were not to be denied and Bosingwa broke the deadlock in the sixth minute with a drive from more than 20 yards out that gave Ruddy no chance as it flashed into the top corner.

Torres almost set up Drogba in front of goal but Norwich who came close to equalising as the game neared the half hour mark.

Wes Hoolahan found Chris Martin in space only for Hilario to pull off a near post block. Martin was first to the loose ball and, having initially tried to take it past the goalkeeper, set up Kyle Naughton for a drive that Hilario did well to tip over.

Norwich then made a change, with defender Zak Whitbread replaced by winger Anthony Pilkington after Holt`s header had been saved.

The half ended with a Drogba free-kick just clearing the bar and Florent Malouda forcing a save from Ruddy, but Norwich had improved following their nervous start and subsequent tactical reshuffle.

Chelsea started the second period with Pilkington deflecting John Terry`s header over and Branislav Ivanovic sending a free header wide from a Lampard corner.

Norwich`s equaliser arrived in the 63rd minute - and it was a free gift from the Chelsea defence.

Hilario and Ivanovic both went for Kyle Naughton`s cross from the right and succeeded only in allowing the ball to drop perfectly for the lurking Holt, who immediately hooked it towards the empty net.

The Norwich captain celebrated wildly with the away fans once it was confirmed that the sliding Terry had been unable to stop it crossing the line in the 63rd minute.

There was more bad news almost straight away when Drogba was hurt in an aerial collision with Ruddy, which was compounded by the heavy fall that followed.

The forward stayed down and was eventually stretchered off, seemingly unconscious, with an oxygen mask on his face.

He was replaced by Nicolas Anelka, with Mata, the £23 million new signing from Valencia, handed a debut at this point.

The game finally shifted Chelsea`s way after Terry made an excellent last-ditch tackle to block from Norwich substitute Steve Morison just as he was in the process of shooting.

The next opportunity was Chelsea`s and when Ruddy brought Ramires down in the box to concede a penalty the goalkeeper was also shown a red card to become the second Norwich player in as many Premier League matches to be sent off.

Lampard despatched the penalty past substitute goalkeeper Declan Rudd and, after 11 minutes of added time, the points were Chelsea`s when Mata took advantage of a loose ball in the Norwich box and slotted in the third.
